A charity says you won its sweepstakes, but you must pay first? It's a scam, the FTC warns
- Scammers use a real charity's name, or one that sounds close
- They say the prize is linked to your past donation
- Caller ID can be faked, even to show a real name or number
Why it mattersReal prizes are free. If anyone asks you to pay, or for your Social Security number, to collect one, hang up.
Scammers also buy search ads, so the top result for a charity's name may not be the charity.

The FTC issued the warning on 26 October. Its advice: look the charity up yourself, search its name with words like 'complaint' or 'scam', and skip paid ads in search results. In the FTC's words: 'The moment someone tells you to pay to claim your prize, you know you're dealing with a scam.' Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

- Art historians have long dated it to June that year

Your Body TodayEyes & the dark
Your eyes need up to half an hour to adjust fully to the dark
- Cells called rods let you see in dim light
- Bright light uses up their light-catching pigment, rhodopsin
- Rebuilding it takes about 20 to 30 minutes in the dark
Do todayNext time you step out into the dark, give your eyes a few minutes before you look at your phone.
If seeing at night is getting harder, or driving after dark feels unsafe, see an eye doctor.
The evidence
Your eye has two kinds of light cells. Cones see colour and detail in bright light. Rods are far more sensitive, but see no colour, which is why the world looks grey at night. A glance at a bright screen undoes part of the rods' recovery. Vitamin A is needed to make rhodopsin.
